Re: Sir Alex seriously ill
His teams played with style and swagger, he had more money to spend than other clubs at the beginning but still built special teams, and even when other clubs come to the party with more money he'd still eventually come out on top. The reason he is the best, though, is that they never faded, even after a bad season (finishing 3rd) they'd come roaring back and win the league within a season or two. He maintained standards throughout, and even retired on a Premier League win at the age of 71. Phenomenal.

For someone to rate Bobby Robson against him, with the greatest of respect to a good football man, they are poles apart as managers, and it just shows you that they shouldn't be discussing football matters.

I seem to remember that Glen Roeder brought Fergie into the home dressing room to tlak to the team after Man U had given us a good thrashing at UP once.

Re: Sir Alex seriously ill
As much as Fergie has ‘played the game’ in being intimidating and aggressive (to win for Man U & bully weak referees!) you would always hear from young managers that he would always be ready with help and advice.
A lot of that was because he appreciated the help that people like John Lyall gave him.

His record is beyond compare and hopefully makes a quick and full recovery.
He did amazing things with Aberdeen breaking the stranglehold of the two church teams even before what he did in England.
He built 3 or 4 great teams which has been beyond others like Clough and Wenger.

Norman 2:27..

I was at the John Lyall memorial evening, What a special night it was.

Matt Lorenzo was introducing all the West Ham legends one after the other, everyone in the room standing & clapping as they walked in. Pretty much every West Ham player of note that had played under Lyall was there, then after Lorenzo had finished calling the West Ham legends in, he said we have one more special guest tonight, I remember thinking who's this going to be, then he calls in Sir Alex Ferguson!

He got the longest & loudest round of applause of the night, which said it all about the man considering players like Brooking & Bonds were there. For all the intense rivalry we'd had with Utd over the years, the fans in the room that night were in raptures when he walked in, almost in awe, was a very special moment.

He said nice things about West Ham, was very fond of John Lyall & was good friends with him, said John was someone he looked up to when he first went into management, loved the way Lyall's sides played, admired West Ham's scouting network (whatever happened there!?) & said he'd always had a soft spot for West Ham even though we stopped Utd winning the league twice!

In his speech he said he'd been asked months prior about attending the evening, he said yes straight away, but didn't stop to think it would fall on the night before a big game for Utd, (they had Wigan the following day & needed to beat em to win the league) He said I shouldn't really be here tonight, I should be with my team in the hotel as you know we've got a huge game, but somethings in life are more important then football & one of em is keeping a promise, I promised I'd be here tonight so I wasn't going to let anyone down. The whole room were very took in by him, it was a very moving moment.

Before that evening I was only ever luke warm on Ferguson, as I'm sure many more were, now I have him as a very special manager/person. Hope he pulls through & makes a full recovery..

I haven't chewed my own arm off.

Is that why Ferguson didn't ditch ManU to take us over when Allardyce did?

It's my fault, isn't it?

Complete respect gor his accomplishments and lifestyle...

Bit of a cunt at times...but you always knew his views...right or wrong...

Loved winning there...especially the Di Canio- Barthez...Tevez...and Defoe goals...

Fair point Debs - just I don’t think it’s any respect to the man to call him “the greatest ever”. And that’s not wishing him or his family ill either.

H&P...have no axe to grind with you at all but i think your posts on this thread do lack a bit of class to be honest.

Just lets hope he pulls through for his family's sake and you have to reapect his achievements. and what he brought to the game. Lets face it which of us wouldnt have chewed our own arm.off to get have got him.at West Ham, winning things with our kids?
